RE: torn awning, can I repair?

My awning has a two foot tear in it. It starts at the corner right where it goes into the metal roll up piece. Is this repairable? If not, where is the cheapest place to get replacement fabric? I had awnings on my house that needed replacement and the cost was so high I couldn't believe it. So, I ended up at Hancock Fabrics and got awning material for either $4.99 or $5.99 a yard, believe it or not. I sure couldn't believe it...anyway, we bought it about 10 yrs. ago and had a friend who was a seamstress make them for us for $100 and they're still going strong, 10 yrs. later. Might want to ck. them out or even awning material online. Worth a try anyway.

RE: Decision time. Any Advice?

Dodge...can't beat'em! We love our Dodge diesel. We've had Dodge everything for about 10 yrs. with no problems out of the...period.

RE: Unbreakable Dinnerware

Yeah, Melmack was great, wasn't it? Lightweight and unbreakable. I looked for it too..thrift stores a great idea if you don't care what it looks like. We bought the thin stuff at WalMart...can't remember what you call it...something with an M I think. White...goes with everything...and square...fits the cabinets!

RE: RGV Ain't Windy

I HATE the wind, therefore, I love Canyon Lake, Tx. We have had NO wind to speak of for the past 6 mos. Once or twice a heavy breeze came along. But tonight a cold snap is due in and wind of 25 mph tomorrow. But by Sunday it will be gone. I can deal with that. Awning in..awning out....not enough wind to bother with it...so far anyway.

RE: The Picken's Plan for RVs?

I often wondered why people didn't mount a smaller version on the front of the RV, so that it would be generating while driving down the road. Seems as if it would be a good idea...and you'd get the batteries all charged up when you got to where you were going....and maybe even when you were there, if wind was working well!! Yeah, but think of all those bugs you'd murder!

RE: Rear kitchen

Our rear kitchen doesn't have a door out the rear, but not having the counter ejected into the living space is wonderful! We have tons of open space, counter space, cabinets, etc. I have room for every kitchen gadget I could ever want and lots of living room space to boot. Love our rear kitchen!

RE: Clear up my ignorance......

Our 5'er has the stabilizers built in, which we really like. We also have a rear kitchen which we LOVE - it gives us more open room. We took out the table and 4 chairs and put in another recliner (we have 2 lazy boys cause we removed the one that came with the 5'er and replaced it.) We love our 5'er!

RE: Is this all we need to do?

Easy enough to do this also.... I'd pull the plugs on the low point drains, maybe drain the water heater and leave the furnace on low. Open the cabinet doors under the sinks where there is plumbing to let the warm air circulate in. A few minutes of this will give you more peace of mind on your trip. Good advice! Thanks!

Is this all we need to do?

We are using our 5'er as a stationary home in Texas while our home in Arkansas is waiting to be sold. We have a son that cares for the home, and we will be returning for about 10 days for Thanksgiving. While we're gone we want to make sure that the 5'er doesn't freeze up in case it gets that cold while we're gone (1st freeze or near/freeze will be tomorrow night). We will turn off and unhook water, and the empty tanks, and lock up all doors, but is there anything I'm missing? Should we leave the heater on low or turn off the propane? Thanks!

RE: Getting ready for our first cold snap

I did fine with one cube heater at Watson Mill Bridge (GA) last week. I have a small trailer, though. One thing I find that helps is the way you dress. I was comfortable camping in the teens and in freezing rain last winter (and I have a feather lite--not built for cold weather). I wear long underwear, sweat suit, wool socks, sweat shirt, and a HAT (very important) and sleep in a sleeping bag. Of course, only my dogs get to see me!:E:E:E.... I'm not a socks type of person and I have to agree when traveling in the RV and it gets cold if you put socks on it makes a BIG difference how they keep you warm. Kinda cold nights in the MH and just putting socks on at night does the trick. It's a known fact we loose most of our body heat from our bodies from our head and feet. I just can't get used to wearing a hat at night though!:B I worried about staying warm in my first TT and then again with the MH and really it has never been that bad and I rarely turn the furnace on, just use the portable heaters.C We've found this to be true also...dress warmly! Several years back we had an ice storm and lost power for about 6 days in our all electric house. The kitchen/living room combo in our home is huge and where we camped out - next to the fireplace, which really didn't help that much cause the heat went straight up the flu. But what we found that helped tremendously in addition to dressing warmly were candles. We place quite a few around in that big area and it really took the chill out of the room. Of course in a trailer you have to be extra careful about candles, but a couple in the living area/kitchen will probably help take the chill out as well. We burn one daily anyway....helps with the romance.

Getting ready for our first cold snap

We've been at Canyon Lake since May and have had a couple of cooler nights where we had to run the electric fireplace and even the smaller electric heater on low for just a bit, but the days warmed up to the 70's and we were fine. Friday night we're supposed to have a cold front come in with the low's to possible freezing on Sat. So on goes the propane heater I guess. We are curious to see how warm we'll stay in this 4 season's unit. We'll also be leaving a window cracked for condensation. Will keep you posted on the results. Thanks for letting me share.

RE: Window Surrounds..what have you done

We finally got the surrounds done (well, almost - 3 out of 5) and will finish the rest this week. The blue night shades are still with us and the top material has a touch of blue in it with browns, rusts, golds and taupes, so that hint of blue lets the blue night shades work. Would love to post pix, but I'm not good at that here for some reason. As soon as the new love seat comes in all the blue will be GONE! The surrounds were so easy - they were held up by 4 screws and came down all in 1 piece. A friend helped me and we measured 4 times...and cut the material too short! But we were able to piece it together and you can't even see the seams (really!) The floral material hides the seams perfectly and we matched it like wallpaper.

RE: If all else fails, there's duct tape!

UPDATE on the duct tape: First of all, Apollo 13 astronauts used duct tape to make a square peg fit a round hole and get back to earth - DH worked at NASA at the time and is speaking from first hand experience, not just the movie Apollo 13. It really happened that way. Duct Tape saved their lives...among other things. BUT TO THE ORIGINAL PROBLEM: This technically challenged person didn't figure out that the stand has an extension on it and all we had to do is pull down on it and it extends. DH figured it out. DOUBLE DUH! We can see the pictures fine now. I feel so completely stupid....but I do love Gorilla tape too...and I'll have to try Gaffers tape. See how cool this site is? I love it! Thanks everyone!

RE: If all else fails, there's duct tape!

Is it a cheap one? No! Originally $159...but one that was being discontinued as "last years model" from Best Buy - on sale half/price. They had 3 left. It's just that the stand is short. It has all the requiste buttons and options that really make it nice, in addition to 2 colors of frames. It won't be seen since it's on the back, but it just irritates the snot out of me that I have to gitch it up.

RE: Camping in Houston

Planning on visiting our son in Houston. Looking for someplace on Houstons west side between the inner and outer loop to park or camp for 5 to 7 days. Good luck! The west side of Houston is Katy to me and I've been looking too. There are 2 in that area and both are full with Hurricane Ike evacuees - even at this late date. I called both last week. Brookshire has a cg right on the freeway from what I've been told - a KOA I think...not especially nice from what someone said. If you find one let me know, will ya? Thanks!

If all else fails, there's duct tape!

We just bought a nice large digital picture frame to have pictures of our travels and the family out in the open instead of just on the computer. We really like it except for 1 thing...it doesn't stand up straight enough - it leans way back and the stand part is too short...so unless someone can come up with a better solution, there will be an extension duct taped to the stand, making it longer. I can't help but wonder why this simple thing on the frame is so WRONG...who would design something like this? Looks like their engineer went on vacation...

RE: Bunny is so smart

Your dog sleeping on your bed also made me smile...reminded me of our big fat 17 lb. cat that loves to lay BETWEEN our legs at night. If we get up for a potty run, he jumps down with a little "singing voice" as if to say "Whatca doin' Mom?". He follows us everywhere, even in the middle of the night.

RE: Remote truck starter?

What a waste of fuel, I start my truck and go. Well that's the beauty of living in America - different strokes for different folks. This feature is great if you live in cold country and don't want to freeze your hiney off first thing in the morning. Personally I'd prefer to go jump in a nice warm truck with the seats heated. Some tooches are tougher than others I guess.

RE: Fleas - Help me please

Don't know if you can use it on the cats, but my parents used to use Sevin Dust on their dog and yard and even in the house sprinkled on the carpet. But since cats lick everything it's probably not good on the cats or anything they walk on.
